Beginning Screen Printing

Description:
Come and explore the magic of screen printing!
In this class we will use light-sensitive photo emulsion to create graphic prints. You will be able to print on many different surfaces including paper and fabric.
Be ready to take an experimental approach and learn by doing!

Content:
* Introduction to photo stencil screen printing
* Demonstrations of 'how to' from preparing the screen through to printing an image
* Demonstrations of mixing ink, layering and registration methods
* Lots of time for hands-on experimentation and to work individual projects
* Discussion of end results

Objectives:
* Explore printmaking as a next step in the graphic and digital image creation process
* Introduction to the techniques involved in photo stencil screen printing
* Explore the creative potential of screen printing

Outcomes:
You will have gained a greater understanding of the exciting possibilities of screen printing in terms of extending your drawn and digital imagery.

Required materials

  • $40 materials fee which will cover the use of silk screens, squeegees, emulsion and screen prep chemicals in addition to inks and ohp film
  • paper and smooth fabrics like calico (pale colours)
  • xerox copies or images to xerox copy
  • digital files like jpgs, photoshop, tiff formats on memory sticks or cd or dvds
  • black vivid marker, black biro pens, drawing materials visual diary, reference materials
  • bring both drawings and photos that you like. good images are high contrast black and white images. in this context black and white means no grey tones - just black and the white of the paper.
  • when you think of your images, remember that the black on your image can be printed in any colour of ink but it will all be one colour.
  • image size: you can work from small up to a3 in size
  • if this makes no sense, please do not worry. as always, it will become clearer when you see the process being done and even more so when you do it yourself. just bring any image that appeals to you and we can adjust it to be appropriate.
