All block classes run from 9.30am - 4.30pm.

Block 1 runs during Week 1 of term, Block 2 runs during Week 9 of term.

Encaustic: Painting with Beeswax and Pigment

Description:
Encaustic Painting was practised by the Greeks as far back as the 5th century B.C. Its inherent qualities range from delicate transparent glazes to thick, opaque and sculptural surfaces. Encaustic Painting relies on the building up of thin layers of pigmented wax to create gorgeous effects. Come and give it a go! Suitable for all levels.

Content:
* Basic materials and formulas used in encaustic
* Safety procedures
* Introduction to Tools and techniques for fusing
* Transparencies and glazes
* Layering and scraping/scribing
* Building up of texture
* Line and edge
* Collage
* Time for lots of experimentation

Objectives:
To: -
* Introduce Encaustic as an art making medium
* Provide an environment where self-confidence and knowledge are fostered
* Master the technical skills needed to work with wax painting
* Continue to build on your use and knowledge of vocabulary used with creativity practice

Outcomes:
* Sample pieces exploring the methods of encaustic painting
* One finished piece that will extend beyond the sample pieces
* An understanding of the exciting possibilities of encaustic painting that will allow you to continue explorations on your own

Required materials

  • several cheap bristle brushes in different sizes (they must not be synthetic). one should be at least 2 inches wide. i will have some that you can purchase on the day
  • plywood supports from small to a3 in size
  • scraping tools pointy tools, razor blade and plastic holder for scraping - window scraper, clay scrapers
  • wax medium. this can be purchased through materials shop. you will spend about $40-60 on wax.
  • collage materials - fabric is good, unsized lightweight papers work well, too
  • if you have any of the following please bring to this class: oil paint, oil pastels, oil sticks, lacquer-based inks

Cost to student:
$45-$75 for wax $10 for powdered pigments available in class
